| Stephen Marshall | is Senior Lecturer at the Bartlett School of Planning in London. In his book ‘Cities Design and Evolution ’ (2008), he researches how cities are put together; both in terms of how different parts are organised in relation to the whole, and how they are created or evolve over time. In his book, he presents a new evolutionary perspective that recognises both the designed and organic nature of cities.
Stephen Marshall was asked to reflect on how the cities in Randstad Holland develop as self organising systems. Several questions that were adressed are:
- How can these systems contribute to the growth of the urban
agglomeration as a whole? - What steps need to be taken to strengthen the self organising capacities of cities in networks?
- How is the governance of the 21st century network city managed?
